7th Annual Graduate Student Symposium, 2016

The 7th Annual MIPSE (Michigan Institute for Plasma Science and Engineering) Graduate Student Symposium took place on October 5, 2016 at the University of Michigan. The symposium included a special seminar by Prof. Luís O. Silva of the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) Lisboa, Portugal, titled "In Silico Plasmas under Extreme Conditions: from Particle Accelerators to Pair Plasmas in Pulsars". We especially thank Prof. Silva and our MSU and MTU colleagues for coming to the symposium.

7th MIPSE Graduate Symposium

We had a total of 39 poster presentations – including 31 presentations by UM students, 7 by MSU students, and 1 presentation from MTU. We thank all of the presenters for their excellent efforts, and particularly thank Kurt Terhune (supervised by Prof. Brad King) from Michigan Technological University (MTU) for attending the Symposium. This is the first participation by MTU in MIPSE, and we hope that this is just the start of a new partnership. The Symposium was a great success, enabling our students to share the results of their state-of-the-art research.

Best Presentation Award

7th MIPSE Graduate Symposium

Award winners with judges, left to right: Kevin Ma (UM), Dr. Yangyang Fu (judge, MSU), Prof. Ryan McBride (judge, UM), Amanda Charris (MSU), Dr. Christian Durot (judge, UM), Scott Rice (MSU), Shuo Huang (UM)

The MIPSE judges (Prof. Ryan McBride, Dr. Yangyang Fu, and Dr. Christopher Durot) for the best presentation competition had quite a challenging task in selecting from the many outstanding presentations. The Best Presentation Award winners are:

  • Amanda Charris (ECE, MSU)
  • Shuo Huang (EECS, UM)
  • Kevin Ma (ME, UM)
  • Scott Rice (ECE, MSU)

The winners received a MIPSE mug, award certificate, and a plasma book of their choice.
