MIPSE is pleased to name outstanding researchers across the many sub-fields of plasma physics for an Early Career Lecturer award. The awardees are invited to present a special MIPSE seminar on a topic of their choice.

Cami Collins

Cami Collins with Louise Willingale

Dr. Cami Collins (Oak Ridge National Laboratory) gave a special MIPSE seminar on November 15, 2023. In her talk, titled “Integrating Physics and Engineering for Fusion Reactor Design, Assessment, and Optimization”, Dr. Collins discussed the status and future steps for a magnetically confined fusion (MFE) reactor – the tokamak – to deliver plasma produced electricity onto the grid.

Jack Hare

Jack Hare with Ryan McBride

Prof. Jack Hare (MIT) gave a special MIPSE seminar on March 29, 2023. In his talk, titled “Pulsed-Power-Driven Plasma Physics at MIT”, Prof. Hare described the recently founded pulsed-power program at MIT, focusing on experiments on magnetic reconnection and magnetized turbulence; and the PUFFIN long-pulse facility.

Davide Curreli

Davide Curreli with Mark Kushner

Prof. Davide Curreli (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) gave a special MIPSE seminar on November 17 , 2021. In his talk, titled “The Plasma-Water Interface: Modern Challenges and New Software Tools”, he discussed the science and technology challenges of plasma interactions with liquids in the context of water purification and plasma medicine; and development of a new modeling framework to address those challenges.

Justin Little

Justin Little

Prof. Justin Little (University of Washington) gave a special MIPSE seminar on March 31, 2021. In his talk, titled “Mode Transitions in Low-temperature Aerospace Plasmas”, Prof. Little discussed his experimental and theoretical results for mode transitions and instabilities in helicon plasma thrusters and magneto-shells, a method for using plasma for slowing space vehicles entering atmospheres.

Derek Schaeffer

Dr. Derek Schaeffer (Princeton University) gave a special MIPSE seminar on October 21, 2020. His talk, titled “Bringing Cosmic Shock Waves Down to Earth”, highlighted Dr. Schaeffer’s pioneering work on the formation and evolution of collisionless shocks, as found in astrophysical plasmas and the Earth’s magnetosphere.
